Influence( The Psychology of Persuasion) is an amazing book. I was reading this book at the bookstore and I was astonished to noticed the simple principle of psychology of persuasion can make little difference in dealing with others. But, once we realize the importance of persuasion and understanding the psychology of humans--then it becomes an easier process to influence other people. Because, implementing the practice of psychology of persuasion would have a better impact in relationship with others such as friends, colleagues, spouses, customers and new associates. http://www.influenceatwork.com/( Robert Beno Cialdini is the Regents' Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University and was a visiting professor of marketing, business and psychology at Stanford University)
There was interesting study, which was carried out across 8,000 people employed in businesses, hospitals, universities, the military and government agencies found that virtually all of the respondents believed that they communicate as effectively or more effectively than their co-workers. However, research shows that the average person listens at only about 25% efficiency. While most people agree that listening effectively is a very important skill, most people don't feel a strong need to improve their own skill level. Moreover, we are used to the common cliché that most of our communication is non-verbal.
But, there is an great advantage to increase our listening efficiency to engage much better with others. For example, I started to evaluate my communication skills by scrutinizing my listening skills efficiency to notice any difference. Then, I began to analyse any mistakes to improve my communication skills for the following interactions with others. It's really simple to define true social value and true influence. Bill Clinton is an perfect example of person who is exhibiting signs of high social value. He developed the Clinton Health Access Initiative, which is based on offering an affordable health care treatment for disadvantaged people in least developed countries. He made an effort to visit Vietnam in 2014 to engage with orphaned children. However, it takes a certain of level of humility to establish rapport with disadvantages and vulnerable people. Nevertheless, we tend to be bombarded with the misconception about power and status. Presumably, we may think that person who drives the latest Lamborghini is truly influential. But, it depends on the levels of contribution, the person is willing to make in his or her community or the world. For example, having an high paying job wouldn't necessarily determine how powerful you are. But, if you are making an significant changes and contribution in your community, that will really determine your true power of influence. Furthermore, paying taxes may not be an indication of making significant contribution to the society; but doing extra work in the community to help the disadvantaged people would really magnify your levels of influence. In general from community work to business world, if you add value to others and build an connection with others, that will validate your high social value and true influence. Likewise, in the business realm, building connection with clients is extremely important, to paraphrase In the words of business coach expert from Australia, Wilson Luna stated in the video below. Embracing obstacles is discovering opportunities in the worst moments of our lives. Instead of wallowing in powerlessness and misery of trials and tribulation; it could be a perfect opportunity to strengthen our character, mind and spirit. An exemplification as a source of motivation is the personal life story of the Novelist Jeffrey Archer. His political career ended in conviction and subsequent imprisonment( 2001-2003). Moreover, his trials and tribulation has strengthen his spirit and motivation in becoming one of the best novelist in Britain. Personally, I love his novels from The Sins Of The Father, Best Kept Secret and Be Careful What You Wish for. Jeffrey Archer is an perfect example of person who demonstrates courage and faith in being relentless to achieve ultimate greatness, despite any setback and crisis. Always remember, the greater the setback; the greater the comeback.
Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body.” ― Seneca Harder the battle, the sweeter the victory- Les Brown One of my favourite historical documentary. However, It's amazing to observe the tremendous influence of The Medici Family. From a small Italian community in 15th century Florence, the Medici family would rise to rule Europe in many ways with generosity. Furthermore, this could be a great lesson to learn the simple principle of influence and persuasion.
"The great man who is a miser is a great fool, and a man in high places can have no vice so harmful as avarice. A miserly man can conquer neither lands nor lordships, for he does not have a plentiful supply of friends with whom he may work his will. Whoever wants to have friends must not love his possessions but must acquire friends by means of fair gifts; for in the same way that the lodestone subtly draws iron to itself, so the gold and silver that a man gives attract the hearts of men."
